Man has been involved in a love-hate affair with the automobile for the best part of a century. The Car presents the fascinating story of the world of motoring since the pioneering vehicles of Benz and Daimler took to the road. All the great cars are here, from the ubiquitous Ford Model T, Beetle, and Mini to the super-luxury coupes-de-vi I le of the inter-war years and the opulent limousines of the 1970s; from the bone-shaking tourers of the 1890s to the ultra-fast sports cars of today. Here, too, is basic information on how a car works— including chapters on engines, transmission, suspension, steering, brakes, and bodywork— how cars are assembled at the factory, and how a new model is created. Ten chapters are devoted to the major motor sports — grands prix, sports-car endurance races, rallies, hill climbs, drag races, and others. And there is a section devoted to the rapidly growing business of old-car col lecting and restoring. The private motor car has always represented much more than a means of getting from one place to another. For some it is an expensive if necessary evil, for others an object of pride and a symbol of status; while it offers convenience and pleasure to millions, it pollutes the atmosphere, causes congestion of highways and city streets, and guzzles vast quantities of our dwindling reserves of petroleum. The Car takes a cool look at these and other social issues raised by mass motoring. The Car is written by 14 distinguished motoring authors. It contains more than 350 illustrations, most of them in colour, including many specially commissioned drawings and maps.
