It is now one hundred years since the first intrepid motorist set out in his new machine and man's tentative love affair with the car began. The first noisy and unreliable horseless carriage' was greeted by many with scepticism, derision and even hostility. Nevertheless, the relationship rapidly blossomed in a way that has become more astonishing and more obsessive as the years have passed. As one of man's most coveted objects and most powerful fantasy symbols, the car has always been much more than a machine, a mere means of transport, and there is no aspect of our lives — social, economic, political, cultural, aesthetic and, indeed, sexual — that has not been touched and deeply influenced by it. What makes the history of the car so compelling is not how the vehicle itself has changed — for it has altered remarkably little — but how much it has changed us. The car is arguably the greatest catalyst of social change that the world has known. The object of both love and loathing, it has shaped man's environment, pushed back the frontiers of time and space, and created opportunities for work and leisure, travel and romance inconceivable a century ago. It has also killed and maimed, polluted and devoured to an appalling degree. In the words of one of its critics, it has become the world's 'executioner', Automania is an original, provocative and irreverent view of the one hundred years that man has spent caught up in a relationship of passion, and often of pain, with his extraordinary creation.
