"There are many automotive makes," the engineer Orazio Satta told Griff Borgeson in 1970, "among which Alfa Romeo stands apart. It is a kind of affliction, an enthusiasm for a means of trans-port. It is a way of living, a very special way of perceiving the motor vehicle." That perception — that way of living — is the Alfa Romeo tradition, perpetuated by the men who created it: the pioneering Merosi, the dashing Ferrari, the brilliant Jano, the vi-sionary Satta. The cars they built — and took to the races — have been a vivid and power-ful force for the past 90 years. Few sports-car marques have survived with the vivid success of Alfa Romeo, from the first model in 1910 to the unbeatable P2 Grand Prix racer (which even Ferrari wouldn't drive); the indominatable 1750 GS of 1929; postwar's 159; the 1600 Guila, the 1750 Spyder of 1967, up to today's 164. The Alfa Romeo Tradition presents all of the great Alfa Romeo cars in over 120 color pho-tographs taken in Italy, America and England, and in rare black-and-white photographs. For the first time, it describes the genius behind the cars — the controversy, the intrigue, the enthusiasm and the sheer hard work that gave them life. Author Griff Borgeson brings a spe-cial insight to the subject, since he has known many of the Alfa Romeo leaders personally, including the late Vittorio Jano, Enzo Ferrari, and Orazio Satta.
