The Firebird series was America's answer to die . flood of sporting imports that hit the US roads in the 1950s and '60s. Pontiac's leading lights, notably John De Lorean, wanted to create a sports car but ended up creating something unique, the world-famous Trans Am. There were many early difficulties to overcome, but the resounding success of their concept was to score an indelible mark on the shape of the per-formance sector of the US automotive industry. Knudsen, Estes, De Lorean, Malone, Humbert and Jordan were just some of the famous names involved in the launch, development and progress of the Firebird series. They led talented teams of designers, engineers and drivers to create the Fire-bird saga — a saga born of grit and sheer profes-sionalism. From early days through to the futuristic thorough-bred shape of today, they experimented, sweated, argued and fought to create a unique story. But above all they created the car with the big bird, swooping ahead, powering its way into bold new achievements.
