The Range Rover was already a 15 year old design when the first article in this book was written. By that stage of their existence, most cars are entering a period of gentle decline but in fact during the next 10 years we see the Range Rover developed as it had never been developed before. Firstly, an injected version of the trusty V8 petrol engine, then a turbodiesel alternative; and over the next few years further engine changes added power (in the shape of the 3.9-litre V8 and a larger turbodiesel). and then economy (in the shape of the Tdi turbodiesel). And all the time, the Range Rover was being pushed gradually further up-market, moving from the executive car alternative of the 1980s to the luxury car alternative of the 1990s. The impetus for many of these changes came from the USA, where the Range Rover was launched in 1987 (at the ripe old age of 17!) and became a huge success. Demand for more room in the rear and more refinement led to the development of a long-wheelbase version with height-adjustable air suspension, and that in turn pioneered much of the technology for the second-generation Range Rover which was announced in 1994. The well-loved original nevertheless remained in production long enough to see out its 25th anniversary in 1995, rebadged most appropriately as the Range Rover Classic.
As the articles in this collection show, the Range Rover was never without its faults, but its appeal always managed to transcend them. After 25 years in production, it was still widely respected as the best of the luxury off-roaders, and the impact it had on the motoring scene will still be felt long after the last example has left the production lines.
