Following on from the enormous success of the first series Subaru Impreza Turbo—also known as the WRX in many international markets—the company (Fuji Heavy Industries, of which the Subaru automobile division is by far the largest subsidiary) introduced a thoroughly revised model for MY2001 in Europe. This new Impreza was the subject of needless controversy regarding its styling, in particular the headlights, but it was really a storm in a teacup as one or two media people led the pack. The really important issues with the MY2001 model was its vastly more rigid body structure that gave the suspension a much firmer base from which to work, something that was overlooked completely in the hysteria surrounding the other issue! Carried over was the thoroughly proven 2-litre horizontally opposed (boxer) engine with initially a 5-speed manual gearbox and then a 6-speed unit, the strut-type coil spring suspension and the All-Wheel Drive system. As with the original edition, the interior was possibly its weakest link; it was extremely functional with superbly comfortable front seats but its heritage was obvious. Performance was still excellent and its ability to cover huge distances in double-quick time was nothing short of astonishing—you would need to drive a vastly more expensive car to better its abilities. With this second generation Impreza WRX sales began in the vast American market. Even though the Americans were not “tuned in” to the World Rally Championship the Impreza WRX message was now being understood, that here was a seriously quick piece of kit that could do double duty as a family car and a weekend racer. Sales, not unsurprisingly, have been very strong in America. To add to its glory, small numbers of a 2.5-litre turbocharged boxer engined version have been released although its performance was only marginally quicker than the original. Through the collaborations between Prodrive and STi, Imprezas have continued their World Rally Championship program with conspicuous success mostly with the talented Norwegian driver Petter Solberg at the wheel. With versions available in limited numbers, like the WRX STi Type-UK with 300 bhp on tap, Subaru has been able to cater for more hard-core people than with the standard version that has a mere 261 bhp. Various magazines have tested these cars and timed them at a remarkable 4.6 seconds for the classic 0-60 mph sprint with a top speed running to a fraction over 155 mph.
