"Genevieve: A Love Story" is the author's account of the sale, repurchase, and meticulous restoration of a 1960 Jaguar that was his pride and joy. Smedley describes the central events in his relationship with his favorite car that do not border on obsession as one might suspect. He was forced to sell the Jaguar due to a job change, and when he was transferred back to the Chicago area he tracked down several subsequent owners and finally found his car rather the worse for wear! He could not bear to see the car in such a state so he negotiated its repurchase and began a multi-year project of restoring every nook and cranny of his beloved vehicle. The story is mostly told through pictures but he describes the events in detail. His many years as a graphic artist are in evidence throughout this book. The photos and their surrounding text are laid out in interesting ways and they help the book stand apart from run-of-the-mill step 1-step 2 restoration books. "Genevieve" is more of an account of the author's relationship to his car than it is a how-to guide, although the descriptions of his work offer some fascinating tips.
