Formula One racing has always been the forcing-ground for technological innova-tion in car construction; the need to win driving the remorseless, and often ruthless, search for improvement in per-formance. The last decade has seen the development in this arena move forward at an amazing pace - mainly through the understanding and exploitation of aerodynamics to improve tyre adhesion, and the use of new lightweight material such as carbon-fibre and Kevlar. It has also been a period in which engine out-puts have been greatly improved through the use of new technology, particularly in the form of the turbocharger. In The Anatomy and Development of the Fl Car Sal Incandela has explained in layman's terms, but nevertheless in great technical detail, the evolution of the Fl car, season by season, from 1975. Every facet of the Fl car is covered com-prehensively - the monocoque, aerofoils and other aerodynamic devices, wheels, tyres, transmission, suspension, and, of course, the engine - in the context of the current technology used and how it has been applied to achieve progress. He also takes a group of the most significant Fl cars from the last decade and, by analysing their design and con-struction, is able to show that the development of the modern F1 car has been, essentially, an empirical process. On its original publication this book was immediately accepted as the definitive work on the subject. Now in its third edition it brings the story up to date by covering the flat-bottomed cars and new developments such as active suspension.
