Cars are built either on a production line, or one at a time. Unit-built cars are termed 'specials', and, while many specials builders have proved successful, few have reached the stage of producing cars in series production. Even fewer specials builders achieve commercial success. Perhaps the common factor for those who have proved successful is that they have produced sports cars — and no cars have been more successful than those bearing the famous badge of MG. The founder of the company, Cecil Kimber, is probably unknown to most motor enthusiasts and journalists, but his specials and their successors are synonymous with the sports car in a way which few, if any, other marques can rival. It was in the 1930s that the adjective 'magic' was first applied to MG cars, and in particular to their record-breaking activities.
