They were sleek, shiny and sexy. They were big, bold and beautiful. They were the cars with glistening chrome, large gril-les and spectacular tailfins. Classic Ame-rican Cars of the Postwar Era takes a look at the cars from the fifties, when a man's love for his four-wheeler came close to matching his love for the girl next door. Authors Alberto Martinez and Jean-Loup Nory have put together an informative text which has been written in a light, easy-to-read style. The more than 50 photographs have truly captured the essence of the fif-ties automobile.
After World War II, the car industry reached an alltime low. Stell continued to be scarce due to the war and the major corporations were still reissuing the same models they were making before the war. But then came a revolution that shook the entire industry — a revolution of style and design that revamped America's four-wheel vehicle. No longer was the car just a sensible means of transportation. It became a genuine showpiece. The car became a mirror reflecting the soul of its owner, a thing of power and irresistible sex appeal.
Classic American Cars of the Postwar Era traces the origin of this "revolution" and its effect on the major manufacturers at that time, namely, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. By the mid-fifties, steel was plentiful. The various models of each car company went under major transforma-tions, both in body and engine. The book discusses the evolution of the classic American car as the tastes of the average car buyer became more sophisticated. Many of the classic cars from that period survived these changes, however, many others did not such as the De Soto and the Edsel.
