In 1902, the first Cadillac rolled onto the fledgling motoring scene to stake its claim alongside the ever growing list of cars from other hopeful makers. By 1916 Cadillac proudly referred to itself as the "Standard of the World." It was and still is -• the only automobile maker ever to win the prestigious Dewar Trophy twice, once in 1908 and again in 1913. Then, in 1916, Cadillac some out with its first V8, which effectively sealed Cadillac's claim to the crown in the luxury car field. From that moment on, Cadillac rose to new heights; V12 and V14 models in the Thirties, together with coachbulit bodies and quality to rival Rolls-Royce. After the war came the famous fins, a brand new V8 in 4949, and many innovations from then on. By the mid Forties, Cadillac was King of the Hill, and definitely the car to be seen in. In 4967, Cadillac further entrenched itself as America's luxury car leader with its front-wheel-drive Eldorado. Then something went wrong; quality took a back seat to a cost-cutting standardization of parts policy shared with GM's other car divisions. Models like the Seville and Cimarron were based upon Olds and Chevrolet, driving Cadillac buyers into the arms of rival, Lincoln. All is not completely lost for one of the world's oldest surviving cars, as this book will show. Covering the important period from 1946 to date, this book attempts to put Cadillac's postwar fortunes and misfortunes -into perspective. Illustrated with new photographs taken by the author, Cadillac, the Enduring Legend is a book that readers will find difficult to put down. Filled with text, Informative specifications and superb photographs, this book pays homage to the one of the world's most respected marques.
