The Japanese car has distant origins. The first automobile built in Japan in an admittedly small series was the Takuri of 1907, but not until well after the war did the story of its industrial development capture the attention of the western world. By 1920 the number of Ford model Is produced in the United States had already topped four million and in Europe in particular, the roaring twenties were preparing to leave to posterity an extraordinary series of technically refined vehicles of rare beauty. But Japanese experiences in this area were limited, linked to the first pioneers at the beginning of the century and a few industrial enterprises. Further development was frustrated by a market which was not yet ready for the automobile as well as by insufficient technical know-how on the manufacturing front. Japanese industries, which had de-veloped in other areas, did not yet believe in the new means of transportation. Automobile production became significant only after the War in the Pacific; the evolution of this industry was guided by precise, coura-geous commercial choices on the part of the go-vernment. First on a national and then on an international level, the prerequisite to growth of the Japanese car was the pragmatic acquisition of European and American technical ex-pertise and style. The fierce competitiveness of this industry, based almost exclusively on the ability to produce at a very low cost (made possible by the country's social situation and the newness of manufacturing facilities) freed Japanese companies for a long while from the need to give their products a distinct technical stamp. But since they have taken the lead as the number-one producer of automobile in the world — and in the face of defensive action by the west — the Japanese have had to create and follow a sophisticated and innovative strategy of technological and industrial development in the areas of design and production which finds expression in both their small city cars and in their Formula One racing vehicles. In The Complete History of the Japanese Car you will find the detailed history of the evolution of the Japanese automobile industry; technical specifications; the production of every Japanese manufacturer; the racing car versions in Formula One and Two, in endurance races and in rallies; the evolution of car design and all experimental prototypes.
