This is the story of the battle to the fore of motor racing by Nigel Mansell, culmi-nating in his challenge for the world championship in 1986. His hopes of final victory were dramatically dashed when a tyre burst in the last laps of the last race. This biography charts his childhood, his early driving in Formula Ford and Formula Three until he attracted the attention of Colin Chapman of Lotus. The Lotus years which followed were difficult ones and with the hiring of Ayrton Senna by Lotus Mansell's future was suddenly in doubt. However, Frank Williams had great faith in him and, joining the Williams Team, the break-through came with Mansell winning the European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, closely followed by victory in South Africa in the next race of the 1985 season. The book naturally takes a close look at the 1986 championship races during which Mansell led the rest of the field for so long. Everything then turned on his performance at Adelaide and it proved to be a spectacular finale to an enthralling season. Christopher Hilton has written an absorbing biography of Mansell which, at the same time as portraying the man, offers a fascinating insight into the world of Formula One.
