John Alfred Prestwich was an innovator and pioneer in the very best senses of the words. Though justifiably remembered for the motorcycle engines produced by JAP, which became ubiquitous in the twenties and thirties, Prestwich's engineering aspirations were far-reaching.
Prestwich was essentially a precision engineer, and. before making his name famous as a builder of motorcycle engines he pioneered successfully, in partnership with FrieseGreene, much of the equipment for the infant cinematography industry.
Soon, however, his attention was attracted by the embryonic internal combustion engine; his early notable successes being scored with engines for aircraft. It was his engines that provided power for such pioneer aviators as A.V. Roe, and also Harry Ferguson (of tractor fame) who was the first man to fly in Ireland.
Sensing a greater commercial potential, Prestwich swiftly changed course again, this time to the product for which be is principally remembered: the JAP motorcycle engine. By the early twenties, these engines were to be found being used in large numbers; by the many motorcycle manufacturers which abounded between the two World Wars. In addition, especially in V-twin form, the engines were adopted by the cycle-car manufacturers, particular success being found when used in the enduringly popular Morgan three-wheelers.
JAP - The Vintage Years chronicles the success of the man and the company and products that bore his name, from the earliest days to their heyday in the midtwenties. The book is illustrated with many rare early photographs hitherto unpublished.
