J.A.P.: The End oj an Era is the second volume of Jeff Clew's fascinating history of Britain's most successful specialist motor cycle engine manufacturer: J. A. Prestwich & Co. Ltd.
The story is taken up in 1926 when JAP's position as the foremost proprietary engine supplier remains unchallenged, and the success in private hands of their engines in competition continues unabated. The move by motor cycle manufacturers to produce their own engines, however, had started, and this growing trend, to become almost universal, would lead, over thirty years later, to the company's demise as an independent entity.
The intervening years, however, were filled with invention and technical achievement, not least of which concerned the JAP speedway engine the success of which was phenomenal, spanning over three decades and outliving the company itself. The company branched out also into the manufacture of industrial engines and became involved in the production under license of an aircraft engine - not for the first time it will be remembeJed - and even· an outboard motor.
The text has been verified by Teddy and Douglas Prestwich, the two surviving sons of the founder, both of whom were intimately involved in the business. Brooklands racing facts and figures were checked by Dr Joseph Bayley, the well-known authority on racing at that famous circuit and on World Record bids. In addition a unique contribution has been made by Wal Phillips who pioneered the early speedway engine at Stamford Bridge.
