The Ford Mustang was Detroit's biggest single success of the 1960s, initiating the whole ponycar genre which was so named in honour of the original. Much of the car’s appeal came from a huge options list, which enabled buyers to personalise their purchases to a very large extent, and it was not at all surprising to find high-performance options among the items on that list. The original model was re-skinned and became heavier for 1967, but this was boom time in the muscle-car market and there was demand for Mustangs with even higher performance. So over the next seven years (and a major redesign for 1971 which produced an even bigger and heavier Mustang), Ford fielded a vast array of high-performance options. It is easy to forget that most of the Mustangs built during this period were relatively ordinary cars, and that some of these high-performance options remained quite rare. All of that makes machines like the Shelby Mustangs, the Mach 1 351 and the Boss models that much more desirable to collectors and enthusiasts today. What this book reveals is the way the high-performance Mustangs were seen at the time they were new, and the final article on Development and Evolution of the car puts everything neatly into context. As a source of information on muscle Mustangs in those exciting years before the Oil Crisis forced reductions in size and safety regulations took their toll, this books makes a great read.
