The postwar automotive world was marked by stodgy 1 prewar throwbacks, dolled up and passed off as "new" cars to satisfy a buying public hungry for personal transportation. American cars were tall, far, and clumsy, wallowing down the math like a sumo wrestler conga line. Then in 1955 everything changed, and nowhere more dramatically than at Ford with its beautiful new Thunderbird. Chevrolet's Corvette might have rivaled the Thunderbird's sleek, two-seat sportiness, but it couldn'r touch the T-bird's real-world comforts and conveniences. Ford offered true personal luxury. From 1955 to 1957 Ford offered the two-seat American sporting car for the driver of discriminating taste. Even when the Thunderbird was forced to grow to accommodate rear searing in 1958, it stayed true to its mission of personal luxury and trend-setting styling. Thunderbird 1955-66 recounts the glory years of Ford's flagship. Author Alan Tut has thoroughly researched the T-bird's genesis and evolution during these, its most formative and critically acclaimed, years. Interviews with designers and engineers, corporate maneuvering, and comparisons with contemporary competitors are accompanied by more than 200 black and white photos culled from Ford and collector archives.
