To millions of people all over the world Graham Hill was a legend both on and off the track and it was by chance that he had almost finished telling his story to Neil Ewart just before his tragic accident in November 1975. Graham lived every minute of his life to the full and this book keeps him alive as it un-folds his story in his own words. As one would expect from this great ambassador for motor sport, and for Britain herself, what he has to say is informative, revealing and often hilarious. The book is based on extensive taped inter-views and, above all, it concentrates on Graham. It took some persuasion to get Graham to talk about himself, for he loved to discuss motor sport and many other topics but hated talking about himself. But once Graham had agreed to write the book he was fortunately prepared to devote a lot of time to the project, though he did write to Neil Ewart in one early letter: 'Time is of the essence and I am very short of essence!' Those words turned out to be tragically prophetic -as the world knows. At first it was thought that the book would have to end with the story of the National Sporting Club Dinner to honour Graham, held only a few days before the accident that killed him, Tony Brise and the highly talented and promising Embassy-Hill racing team. But Graham's wife, Bette, takes the story on from there in the closing chapter, to talk about the accident and its effect on her and their children, and her attitudes and plans for the future. She does so with compassion and, where need be, with humour in the way that Graham would have wished. Graham Hill's book will interest everyone whether young, old, male or female, motor-racing enthusiast or not. This story of a remarkable man is a wonderful reaffir-mation of life.
