When VW Beetles first took part in rallies and trials, some of the cars they competed against were Morris Minors, Ford Prefects, Jewett Javelins, Hillman Minxes, Standard Vanguards, Triumph Heralds, Renault 750s, Fiat 1100s, Slmca Arondes, DKWs and Goggomobils. How many of those are as widely active, if active at all, in motorsport today?
More than 40 years on, Beetles are competing in — and winning— rallycross, autocross, trials, drag racing, autotests, rallying, off-road racing, hill climbs and circuit racing. In some of these, they are only slightly modified from standard.
In drag racing and rallycross, Beetles have been developed to 400bhp or more. There are Beetles with four-wheel drive, turbos and 16 valves. All-Beetle racing, which began in Germany in 1989, has been so successful that it is spreading across the world.
In addition to an often distinguished presence in national, European and international events, the Beetle is used in hundreds of regional and club competitions — many of them almost as old as the Beetle itself— where enthusiasm is unflagging and dedication high. The vast numbers of drivers, modifiers, organisers and spectators Involved at this ground-roots level have played an essential part in maintaining a virtually unique sporting tradition. This book pays tribute to them all, from the famous to the all-but forgotten. Its coverage of such a wide spectrum of competition motoring will appeal to enthusiasts in all categories.
