Beginning with a glimpse of the early heroic days of motor racing, the author traces the history of the sport through the period which saw the advent of supercharging bring a dramatic increase in the output of racing engines, reaching its peak in the mighty Mercedes and Auto Union Grand Prix cars of the 1930s. In describing the postwar scene, the success of the more modest British teams such as Cooper and Lotus is emphasized with their smaller and more agile mid-engined cars, whose basic layout is till the norm today. Finally the irresistible rise of the turbo brings us up to date, with Formula 1 down a blind alley in the author's view, due to its horrendous cost making success dependent as much on sponsorship as on skill. The second half of the book is devoted to racing of other kinds, mainly in the USA, with chapters on the Indianapolis 500-mile race, some really amazing dragsters, speedway racing of various types, offroad racing in the Californian desert, truck racing, and record-breaking on the salt lakes. Throughout the brilliant photographs of men and machines bring the subject excitingly to life.
