It must be said that there were some far-sighted people working at Chrysler as the twentieth century turned into the twenty-first. Out of several concept cars which were intended to show that Chrysler was thinking differently from other motor manufacturers, more than one stood out and begged to be put into production. And among the stand-outs was the one which became the PT Cruiser. The way it looked was only half the issue. Young stylist Bryan Nesbitt had successfully created a modern-looking shape out of classic design cues which included a late-1930s front end and the traditional rear end of a panel delivery van. Faired-in head and tail lamps plus modern streamlining resulted in something which hinted at the classic American hot-rod, too. It was, in brief, entirely new with reassuringly familiar overtones and a hint of excitement. Yet the PT Cruiser was also carefully targeted at a large segment of potential customers. For inside its stylish lines were all the accoutrements of a modern mini-van or what the Europeans call an MPV. There was space aplenty plus flexible seating and good accessibility. And instead of the thirsty, fire-breathing V8 which the looks suggested ought to be under the hood, there was one of Chryslers civilised and economical four-pot motors, mounted transversely and driving the front wheels. With a top speed of around 115 mph, nobody was complaining in that department, either. Early on, Chrysler announced its intention to develop the PT Cruiser, and so far there have been alternative engines (including a diesel for Europe) and some more striking concept machines at the big Auto Shows. There seems no stopping the PT Cruiser at present, and enthusiasts can only congratulate Chrysler on creating what looks like an instant classic for everyman. This is a book of contemporary road & comparison tests, driving impressions & long term tests.
