De Tomaso's Pantera was a product of the 1960s vogue for big American V8 engines in light and slippery sports coupe bodies. With its Dallara-designed chassis and mid-mounted, American-built Ford V8 in a body styled by the Italian house of Ghia, it represented a type of high-performance car which disappeared as the 1970s wore on - yet the Pantera itself hung on for a quarter of a century, developing through upgrade after upgrade. From the original 330bhp model was developed the 350bhp GTS; and at the end of the decade there came the GT5, followed a few years later by the GT5S and ultimately by the 200. For a time in the early 1970s, a link between De Tomaso and Ford saw the Pantera available through Lincoln-Mercury dealerships in the USA, and there were high hopes of big sales. Yet these never materialised, and the Pantera remained as exclusive and elusive as any other supercar of its type. Never really in the mainstream of the genre, it had been designed to appeal to a necessarily limited potential customer base. Yet the car created its own legend and following, and today it has its own devotees. This book traces the story of the Pantera from first to last, and makes essential reading for anyone who is fascinated by the development of this long-serving machine. Models covered: GTS, GT5, GT5S & 200. 208 pages, 600 illustrations including colour.
