The Marcos name conjures up many different things, from the early Wooden Wonder sports-racer to the curiously unsuccessful Mantis or the amazing Mini-Marcos. But the enduring image of Marcos was shaped by Dennis Adams timeless styling for the car which started out as a Volvo-engined 1800 in the early 1960s. That shape went on to be modified into the Mantula, Mantual Spyder and Mantara, and remains as attractive today as when it was first introduced. That a Marcos was always designed to be a fast road car also suitable for track use has never been in doubt. Just how fast it was depended entirely on the engine its builder chose to fit. In the GT, the original Volvo B18 engine was soon supplemented by Ford 1600 and then Volvo 3-litre power, but the engine of choice in the 1980s was the Rover 3.5-litre V8. In the Mini-Marcos, the original 850cc engine eventually grew in size to 1300cc, to give performance which the car's diminutive size completely belied. Marcos owners tend to be a dedicated bunch, recognising that they have chosen as their transport something way beyond the automotive norm. Their cars always attract attention from the simply curious and from those who can see in a Marcos the car of their dreams. The articles in this book should go a long way to satisfying the first group, and a long way towards confirming the second group that their choice could be the right one. This is a book of contemporary road & comparison tests, new model intros & history.
