"A real hairy-chested, swashbuckling little rat that will snap Gramp's head right off his shoulders if you hit the go pedal when he isn't ready." That's how automotive journalist Tom McCahill de-scribed the first Cobra—a 260 roadster. But that was just the beginning; the 260 was followed by the famous 289 Cobra and then came the fire-breathing, god-awful-fast 427 Cobra. All these were the creation of one Carroll Shelby (former chicken rancher but perhaps better known for winning the 24-Hours of Le Mans). This is the story of Mr. Shelby and the products of his company, Shelby-American. Besides the roadsters there were the Cobra Daytona coupe, among the rarest of Shelby-American cars; and the Shelby Mustangs. Produced between the years 1965 and 1970, the Shelby Mustangs G.T.-350, G.T.-500 and G.T.-500KR evolved from bonafide street/race cars to fast, luxurious machines in the European gran turismo tradition. Shelby-American's success was a result of luck, talent, ingenuity, perseverance and remark-able timing—for it required the considerable re-sources and commitment of Ford Motor Company which, in 1963, was gearing its Total Performance image for a gigantic assault on the racing world. And racing was Shelby-American's middle name! This new, second edition brings the Shelby story up to date with his "born again" Chrysler program for Dodge. Replacing the "pumping iron" Cobras and Mustangs are the agile, front-wheel-drive Shelby Dodge Chargers and Lancers, and the Go Like Hell Omnis. Back in cahoots with his old Ford buddy Lee Iacocca, now the Pentastar su-premo, can 01' Shel' do it again? We all know he can...
