Lula Belle, a 6-cylinder '53 Main-line Tudor, wasn't my first car, or even my first postwar Ford (I'd previously owned a '51 Customline Victoria). But she was the only car my wife and I have ever given a name. She was our honeymoon car, and eventually we filled her with four kids, and toured most of the country. That overdrive finally paid off! When I went to work for GM in 1959, plain, high-riding Lula Belle went with me—right into the GM Tec Center and other sancrosanct places where Fords had never gone bef6I4 My associates were tolerantlyamused knowing that I'd been graduate student, and couldn't afford!
a new GM car right off. Eventual! bought a GM car. E3uVLula,Belle was kept for sentimental reasons until 1964 when my wife, casting sentiment aside questioned the wisdom of driviniic whose defroster wouldn't work, doors wouldn't close etc. So we sold Lul Belle to a college kid for 50 INK and when he drove away the lump i my throat was so big I had to un-button my collar. To this day when II see a blue '53 Mainline, pleasant mem-ories wash over me. It's as if I've seen a high school sweetheart, and she's even prettier than I remembered her. Come through these pages with me, share my fond memories of Lula Belle and other Nifty Fifties Fords, and you'll know what I mean.
