It should come as no surprise to see a photograph of a Bentley Mulsanne Turbo on the front cover of this book — without question it's the flag ship of the present range of superb Rolls-Royce motor cars. The accolade of 'best car in the world' still hangs on, and rightly so. The Mulsanne Turbo is not only handsome and successful in sales terms — enough for any flag ship — but it is also a technical tour de force because of its most modern turbocharged engine. And that's new for Rolls-Royce. Always respected for their excellence, seldom for their modernity. At last they have both. Thus the current 'new' range of Silver Spirit cars is special, even amongst these very special of special cars. They follow their heritage with considerable grace and style. Immediately before them was the Silver Shadow series — their first fully monocoque bodyshell, all installed with their own V8 engine. Before that was the Silver Cloud — their bridging car between the old pre-Second War coachbuilt methodology and the new, production line techniques. The Silver Spirit continues the tradition. Within are full details of the design, prototypes and production. Model development is closely followed whether the cars have a Rolls-Royce or Bentley radiator shell. Predictions are made and criticism given where due. This is the first such study in book form. Still supreme, still turning heads in Park Lane or Leningrad, still in everyone's dreams, these Rolls-Royces or Bentleys are just as important to the historian as any have ever been.
