Sure, Pontiac's GTO is commonly credited as this country's first real musclecar. But it was the "Goat's" corporate cousin from Chevrolet, the SS 396 Chevelle, that quickly rose to the top of Detroit's high-powered pecking order. By 1968, Chevy's SS 396 was America's most popular musclecar. In 1969 alone, Chevrolet sold a whopping 86,307 of its big-block mid-sized Super Sports. Counting the early six-cylinder and small-block V8 Malibu Super Sports, as well as the small-block models that returned for 1971 and '72, total Chevelle SS production for 1964 through 1972 was nearly 550,000. And it was the car's rampant popularity in the '60s and '70s that has since translated into healthy collector interest today. Illustrated Chevelle Buyer's Guide details the many reasons why the SS 396 became the king of Detroit's horsepower heap. Tracing the years from the Malibu Super Sport's introduction for 1964 up through the SS Chevelle's last great year in 1972, this book also features the SS 454 and the various small-block varieties. Mike Mueller has authored and photographed more than a dozen books for Motorbooks International. Among his recent credits are Chevelle 1964-1972 in the "Muscle Car Color History" collection, Chevy Muscle Cats in the "Enthusiast Color Series," and Corvette Sting Ray 1963-1967 in the "Sports Car Color History" group.
