This is the first volume on passenger cars in the series of volumes from Biandford on Cars of the World, and it is a companion to Sports Cars 1928-39. The author has for the purposes of this series defined a passenger car as a working self-propelled vehicle, in-tended primarily for private, personal transportation, for pleasure as well as necessity". The book covers the period 1863-1904, the pioneering years of the auto-mobile, and it shows the transformation from horseless carriages, which in fact were often simply carriages with an engine attached, to the "real" motor cars in their own right, designed and built by such people as De Dion, Benz and Bernardi. Technical changes, not all of them improvements, came slowly and patchily and in great variety. The designers were feeling their way in largely unknown territory. These motor cars were custom-built by craftsmen and as such contained a great deal of personal character, as can be seen from the 192 illustrations in full colour, covering this fascinating period of development in the history of the auto-mobile. Mr. Nicholson, author of a number of books already published on motoring history, has written a full introduction relating the technical, economic and social background of the vehicles illustrated. Following the colour illus-trations full descriptions are given of each car, with general technical data and details of development. The intro-duction includes a number of illustra-tions in black and white of detail, some-times in the form of technical drawings. As with the established series of colour encyclopaedias on World Air-craft and other subjects, this unique history of the automobile is likely to become a standard identification work.
