Anotace

Dodge were a little later than other automakers to follow the Mustang with a sporty fastback of their own, but when they announced the Charger in the middle of the 1966 season, they made sure it had power aplenty. Top option on the new model, based on the 117-inch wheelbase of the much-respected Coronet sedan, was the 425bhp 426 Street Hemi motor. Between 1966 and 1974, Chargers always showed well at the NASCAR super speedways, and they always had just the right blend of style and performance to stand out on the street, too. Not for nothing was it a Charger R/T 440 which featured in the famous Bullitt car chase, even though Steve McQueen's Mustang ultimately kept ahead of it. The first generation Charger was replaced by a more curvaceous new model for 1968, the first one to feature the formidable 440 Magnum motor. It was from this second generation Charger that the Dodge division created its astonishing Daytona Charger in 1969, the winged monster designed for NASCAR, who's regulations insist that similar models must be made available to the general public. Minor cosmetic changes kept the second generation model looking fresh until Dodge reorganised their intermediate ranges for 1971, moving the Charger to a 115-inch wheelbase in an attempt to minimise weight gain as emissions control regulations took their toll on engine out-puts. The writing was already on the wall by 1972, when the Hemi ceased to be an option and all engines were tuned for low-lead gasoline, but the Charger remained a credible muscle car until 1974. After that, the Charger name was transferred to a persona luxury line, and the great muscle car tradition was broken. The Charger belongs to a breed of car we shall never see again. But it lives on in the hands of enthusiasts who lovingly restore and run these classic examples of American muscle. For all of them and for the countless fans who would have a Charger if only they could, this book is essential reading. This is a book of contemporary road & comparison tests, model intros, racing & driver's impressions. Models covered: 426 Hemi, 440, 500, 440 Six-Pack, 440 R/T & Charger SE.
