'Brute force and ignorance'; 'You need to be a Nazi to drive with the blower in'; these have been common misconceptions of the superb engineering work undertaken by Daimler Benz in the development of the supercharged car for road and racing use. Starting about 1919, German development engineers turned to supercharging in order to gain extra power from the slow-running engines of the period. That they brilliantly succeeded is shown by the long line of cars from the 1922 Targa Florio winner, to the W 154 and W 165 racing cars of the last years before the war, and passing by the hill-climbing SSKL that swept the board in mountain racing.
Here then is the whole story, from Paul Daimler's first experiments with a Knight sleeve-valve engine to last wail of a racing two stage supercharger before the sirens went. In text, diagram and illustration, the achievements of well-thought-out design allied to superb engineering are catalogued, making the step-by-step development of engines, chassis and suspension clear to all. But with all these facts, the romantic side has not been neglected, the legendary SS cars, the 'elephant blower', and the peerless 'Grosser Mercedes' all have their place, as do the exploits of the immortal Caracciola, von Brauchitsch, and Seaman in the Mercedes racing cars. Not to forget the anonymous salesman who said that 'the sex-appeal of the exhaust note is worth twice the asking price'.
