Volvo's image has long been one of large, heavy care which ooze reliability, strength and comfort and somehow shun performance, style and affection. This 'image' is often misplaced and never more so than with the series of cars discussed within these pages, Certainly they all have the image qualities but they also, almost to a model, turn in some stunning performance and have a delightful style all of their own. The Volvo 1800 and family is a carefully constructed all-embracing title description of the care listed in the sub-title. In something more of a nutshell these cars are the sporting, 4-cylinder Volvos of the fifties and sixties. The types which you might have seen on the ice, on forest and gravel rallies of the day, even on the race track giving many an Alfa Romeo or Sunbeam Rapier a run for its money They are also the cars which many a string-back glove driver might have been heading on a Continental, or across America, drive with 500 miles to cover before nightfall. In the 1980s these cars are being lovingly restored and looked after, that's if they are not will running happily, sometimes still with their original owner who has quite simply found nothing better. They were built to lest, and to perform at a constant yet high level. Never again will cars such as the PV544 'round back: the lovable Amason saloon and the sophisticated 1800 coupi come off the production line—some would say the last of the 'real' Volvos.
