We are not only standing at the bier of a great designer, but we are burying with him the heroic epoch of the motor car. Ferdinand Porsche was the last of the great designers, his name was famous all over the world. He belonged with men such as Daimler, Benz, Bugatti and Lancia, names synonymous with the great makes of cars... he who rests here before us was blessed by a kind fate which gave the motor car to his creative genius to find complete fulfillment.' The words were those of the German Minister of Transport, Seebohm, spoken in his address to the funeral of Ferdinand Porsche on February 3rd 1951. Born on 3rd September 1875 the son of Anton Porsche, tinsmith and deputy mayor in the Bohemian town of Maffersdorf, the young Ferdinand Porsche first served notice of exceptional gifts when at the age of fifteen he fitted the family house with electric lighting. Not only did this free Porsche from the previously obstructive attitude of his strict father, it brought him to the attention of the town's biggest business man, one Herr Ginzkey, who in turn used his influence to secure the boy a position with Bela Egger (later Brown Boveri) in Vienna.
