Much of the worldwide Ferrari reputation comes from their racing record which is unsurpassed by any other manufacturer, the speed and style of their road cars which are acknowledged as the 'standard' by which others are judged and the fact that while building that reputation they used the most glamourous of engines, the vee 12 cylinder. The image-fitting-Ferrari is then a V12, high, high-speed road burner equally at home on the track as on the road. The Ferrari Dino 206 and 246GT and GTS road cars are the exceptions which prove the rule. These Dinos, designed by Pininfarina with their bodies built by S caglietti, are the epitome of that stereotype Italian classic beauty on wheels. Their line can only please — there can be no critics of that —and the manner of their performance cannot displease anyone lucky enough to sit behind the wheel. While not being perfection, and you can read how and why here, they are as close to heaven for most of us.
Ian Webb gives these cars the review they deserve. He describes their origins, specifications, and significance — good points and bad. He sets their case for being a true prodgeny of Ferrari not just 'a Fiat with a Ferrari name'. He also fits the other Dinos in their place — the Fiat, front engined cars and the Lancia Stratos which uses the same engine. Read how the Dino helped to rescue the Ferrari empire. If you are still not convinced that these mid-engined V6 jewels are not as Ian Webb argues they are, then rest with their beauty alone.
