Triumph needed to get their new version of the Bonneville completely right first time. One of the most iconic names in the history of British motorcycling, indeed in motorcycling in general, demanded that. It was impossible to imagine the name Bonneville adorning a machine which was indistinguishable from the common car park crowd.
When the name Bonneville first appeared upon the flanks of a Triumph twin, it was one of the fastest bikes around, and it has remained an icon for speed merchants ever since. Triumph’s problem in these modern times is that their new machine could not maintain that crown, a crown which in any case is coveted by the Daytona models in the Triumph catalogue.
So, they decided to build a motorcycle which carried on the twin tradition, with all of the virtues which accompany this; relative simplicity, relatively light weight and instantly recognisable style, a style of its own. The new machine needed to be unique, both in looks and in character, if it was to succeed against fearsome showroom opposition.
It took a long time for the revived Triumph company to take the Bonneville plunge, but they made it. The success of their twin cylinder range speaks for itself. As you will read within these pages, the bikes can be a delight to ride. They can be accessorised to suit the whims of their rider; they can be tuned to high levels of performance, and they can be maintained in the home workshop, too, maintaining another great British tradition; that of an owner’s high level of personal involvement with their machine.
In this book you will read many and varied views of the modern Bonnie in many of its various versions. Hope you enjoy the reading as much as we enjoy the riding!
