By the early 1990s, high-performance automobiles had largely shaken off the anti-social aura which they had attracted in the wake of the oil crises of the 1970s. Performance really did mean performance once again, and the names which had once meant so much to American motor enthusiasts came back with a vengeance. Among them was Pontiacs Firebird, which had first been seen at the tail end of the 1960s. The modern Firebirds extracted real performance from engines which had been cleaned up to meet emissions regulations, and they offered striking good looks and sporty handling despite their ability to meet the latest crash safety regulations. As before, the Trans-Am was the flagship model, but even this could be improved by the addition of the WS6 option, which could also be added to lesser models. Throughout the 1990s, Pontiacs Firebird remained a machine to be reckoned with, and it successfully retained its all American flavour. As the articles reproduced in this book make clear, it was a mighty impressive successor to the great Firebirds of old. Models covered: Firebird, Trans Am, WS6, Formula, Ram Air, Convertible, Hurst Firebird by Lingenfelter.
