Hans-Henner Hoffmann, with Opel since 1985, studied the graphic arts and advertising and has held a number of key positions in advertising, marketing and sales. After joining the Company, he began work on a previously neglected issue, a systematic Corporate Identity. As in many such cases, through initial revision of identification elements the need for a uniform Corporate Design became evident. This, in turn, resulted in increased acceptance of the role of Corporate Identity in unifying an enterprise, idealistically and factually. It was also recognized as a strategic instrument for corporate leadership. Working with the contemporary emblems and symbols led, as a sort of by-product, to a historic reappraisal of Opel identification, which is expressed for the first time in this book. Since the founding of General Motors Europe in 1986, in Zurich, Hans-Henner Hoffmann has served as Director of Corporate Communications and Corporate Identity, as such in charge of the identity of GM's European brands. including Opel.
Drahu Kohout, born in Czechoslovakia, emigrated to Switzerland in 1969 and has worked freelance for more than 15 years in Visual Communications and Corporate Design. Her work with the emblems and typography shown in this book, many of which she had to create in the absence of reference material, aroused her special interest in this unique subject.
In addition to her important contribution to the overall concept, Drahu Kohout was responsible for the design and technical processes. She also supervised the selection of the informative illustrations. Many of the examples, mainly chosen from Opel communications, can also be viewed as "reflections of the times". Her primary objective was to make this book, both in design and production, a truly outstanding example of corporate-historical literature.
