Introduced in 1979, the new shape Volkswagen Transporter took over the mantle of two well loved forebears, countless numbers of which are still giving loyal service all over the world. Although the shape was completely re-designed, the basic layout remained the same, with the faithful flat-four air-cooled engine at the back, developed over the years from the original Beetle engine. In later models the engine became water-cooled, but remained rear mounted. As with previous models (the subject of separate books in this series) the vehicle was nothing if not versatile, being available as a pick-up, delivery and high-top van and luxury bus, as well as a camper in numerous variations. A four-wheel-drive option called ‘Syncro’ was also developed, which was particularly in demand on special vehicles supplied to the police, ambulance, fire and rescue services as well as to local authorities and the armed forces. So, nearly 50 years after the Type 2 was introduced the third generation carried on the traditions of reliability and versatility and today is the vehicle of choice for thousands of surfers and for young Australians and New-Zealanders on their ‘grand tours’ in Europe. This is a book of contemporary road & comparison tests, new model intros, profile, long term tests plus advice on acquiring a good pre-owned car. Models covered: Vanagon, Wasserboxer, Transporter, Microbus, Caravelle, Carat, Kombi, 4x4, Devon, Westfalia Kamper, Auto-Sleeper, Oettinger & Trakka. 136 pages, approx. 250 illus.
