That short yet dramatic era of the low production hotshot 'wolf in sheep's clothing' Qoar is over. And it has died; the RS Escort has been buried by the Ford Motor Company. Other manufacturers started the syndrome (witness the Mini Cooper S, for example), yet others went further (Vauxhall and the Viva GT, Renault with the 5 Gordini/Alpine; Volkswagen with the GT!) but none did as much, for so long and so successfully as did Ford. The high performance car will never he the same. It all started with the humble 105E Anglia offspring, the standard Escort of 1966 development, 1967 vintage. That car would go very fast if a Lotus-Cortina Twin.Cam engine could he made to fit. The Escort Twin.Cam and its progeny were very successful in rally forest and on the race track. But more important here, they were terrific for the road too. Then there was the RS1600 with RDA engine. Then the RS1800. Then the RS. There was the Escort Mexico (Ilk ll, with push-rod engine, 1152000 (Mk ll with 2 litre soheCortinsillumus/Pinto' engine, and the same again but with Mk 2 bodyshells. It's a complicated story -full of success, littered with development delicacies. Graham Robson unraveldthis intertwined-line of classic care. Resorts out the 'big valves' from the 'toothed belts', the 'wedge noses' from the 'side stripes' in a manner never previously attempted. He analyses, in his perceptive style, the full and complete 'special Escort' production story. It's now, no longer, shrouded in mystery. Here is the 'RS Escort' story.
